‘People are extremely angry’: Defiance grows in strike-hit city of Isfahan

Anger is boiling across Iran as US and Israeli air strikes intensify, with residents in cities such as Isfahan taking to the streets despite ongoing bombardment.

“People are extremely angry … angry at the … US betrayal … angry at the war crimes committed by the United States and the Zionist regime … including the killing of civilians… and the attacks in hospitals,” said Professor Mohsen Farkhani of the University of Isfahan.

The mood is not limited to one city but reflects a nationwide shift in sentiment after weeks of attacks, he said.

“After 27 days … people under any weather conditions and even during the bombardments … are out in the streets every evening until midnight supporting the Islamic republic.”

Farkhani told Al Jazeera many now see the conflict as existential, rejecting expectations that Iran could be destabilised from within.

“They thought that Iran is Venezuela or Syria … and they can easily topple its governing system … But that was totally wrong.”

Instead, he pointed to growing calls for long-term resistance.

“We believe that they [US and Israel] are a … ‘paper tiger’ … and what is happening on the ground is … that we will continue the war until we make deterrence.”

Stocks resume slide as Trump attack extension fails to calm markets

Global stock markets have dropped again, after President Trump’s extension of a deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz failed to calm oil prices or government bonds.

Trump’s postponement of the deadline – after which he said Iran will face attacks on its energy infrastructure – came just after Wall Street stocks closed out their biggest one-day fall on Thursday since the war began.

Markets appeared sceptical about the chances of a deal being struck between the two sides, with oil prices rising once again on Friday and government bonds sliding.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index tumbled 1.4 percent after sliding 1.1 percent on Thursday. Germany’s DAX index was 1.7 percent lower. MSCI’s index of Asian shares, ‌excluding Japan, fell 0.7 percent overnight.

Pakistan FM speaks to Chinese counterpart on mediation efforts

Ishaq Dar, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Pakistan, has spoken with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi amid efforts by Islamabad to facilitate talks between the United States and Iran.

Earlier this week, Pakistan passed on a 15-point proposal from the US to Iran, on Washington’s conditions for a ceasefire. Iran has since rejected those demands as “maximalist” and presented its own demands.

US President Donald Trump has now said that he is pushing back plans to attack Iran’s power facilities by 10 days, until April 6, to give diplomatic efforts a chance.

“We reaffirmed the need to restore peace and stability in the Middle East and the wider region. We agreed to support all efforts aimed at ensuring an immediate end to hostilities, resumption of peace talks, protection of non-combatants, security of shipping lanes, and adherence to the UN Charter,” Dar wrote on X. FM Wang Yi conveyed China’s appreciation and support to Pakistan for its ongoing efforts in this regard.”

Israel threatens to expand target list; ‘intensify’ attacks on Iran

Defense Minister Israel Katz says Israel will “intensify” its attacks and target a broader range of sites in Iran as he accused Tehran of directing missiles at Israel’s civilian population.

Israeli military strikes on Iran “will intensify and expand to additional targets and domains that assist the regime in building and operating weapons against Israeli civilians”, Katz told military officials, according to The Times of Israel.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I warned the Iranian terror regime to stop firing missiles at the civilian population in Israel. Despite the warnings, the firing continues; therefore, strikes in Iran will escalate and expand,” said Katz.

“They will pay a heavy price … and we will continue to operate in Iran with full force until all war objectives are completed.”
